18th July 2024 - finding balance between effort and ease
Dear reader,
A good few years ago I remember myself daily cycling to work, going to frequent crossfit training, being quite rigid in my diet and always on the move. And then my journey began to soften so I could find stillness, feel the nuance in gentle movement and flexibility to make choices that feel good in the present moment. We need both yin and yang, freedom and structure, intuition and routine, ease and effort, grace and discipline. Some of you know I'm moving through yoga teacher training this year and I notice how good it feels to stretch myself out of my comfort zone. Although a massive part of my learning is to rest into stillness - I also got a little comfortable there!
When attempting a hand stand my body shut down in fear - I kept an open mind but honestly didn't think I'd make it up the wall. However with the right support I got to experience what it feels like to be upside down. My body actually has the ability and I won't die - but my mind has a little story to limit my capacity, so it will take practice to convince myself. Without a little push I might avoid more physically (or mentally) challenging practices. Yet once I've worked my muscles I feel invigorated!
"Try it, otherwise you'll never know"
Reflect on a situation in your life (however small) that feels draining. Are you tired because you keep going, pushing, trying, and you're not allowing yourself to stop and rest in the result? Or are you tired from going around in circles repeating the same thought pattern and not making a change in how to approach it? Maybe it's time to try something different!
Being out in the world taking action all day without taking a pause. Sitting on the couch all day contemplating life. Both scenarios might leave you tired at night - but in very different ways. One type of tiredness might feel nourished by a night's rest and one might be desiring a bit more of a stretch. Curious if any of this resonates and how it lands with you?
